Healing with Herbs, Seventeenth-Century Style:
An Afternoon Course
Julie Wakefield
Learn and make plant-based remedies from the 1600s at this lively practical day course. First is a look at the sources: Culpeper and Gerard's herbals, and the recipe books of gentlewomen, and then you will recreate some of the remedies yourself and sample a few of them. And what about magic? We will look at 17th-century astrological herbalism and the plants used at that thime in folk magic (said to be used in cursing, even!), and those plants used by people for protection. Your tutor is Julie Wakefield, a London-based freelancer who gives lectures and museum events on subjects related to historic medicine; she has worked at the Museum of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and the Old Operating Theatre & Herb Garret, where she gained her knowledge of the historic use of natural ingredients in medicine. She studied History, and History of Art at Newnham College, Cambridge and has worked in a number of other museums including the National Maritime Museum. Handouts and samples are all included, and you can take home your potions at the end. (Note: If you are pregnant you will not be able to the remedies).
