About The Event

This lecture explores the world of Finnish folk magicians who are called by various names:  witches, seers, healers and cunning folk. Their practices expressed native customs and beliefs, yet many were accused of witchcraft during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Agrarian Finnish culture did nonetheless preserve great deal, including incantations in traditional poetic metre. The National Archive contains tens of thousands of descriptions of magic rites and over 52,000 recorded variants of magic incantations. Tonight, a Finnish doctoral researcher brings these practitioners, and their arts, to life for the Treadwell's audience.  Informal drinks and socialising follow the lecture.

Dalva Lamminmäki is Finnish folklorist and specialized in Finnish folk healing, spells and mythology. She is currently conducting doctoral research on Finland's sauna culture.
