About The Event

In this two-session workshop, Peter Bebergal and Gareth Branwyn teach ways of doing magic using the concepts and techniques of roleplaying games.  They start from the premise that all magic involves roleplaying, inhabiting a new consciousness, and a will to honor whatever specific traits and attributes belong to that role.  Both magic and roleplaying alter consciousness: but each has something to teach the other. Magic as a spiritual practice often ends up devoid of deep imaginative play. Roleplaying is often missing the depth of real occultism. Peter and Gareth will lead participants in hands-on exercises, discussion and practical workings. They will even introduce their technique for devising Solominic-like planetary sigils using polyhedral dice. PDFs of workshop materials will be emailed beforehand but please bring

  • complete set of polyhedral dice
  • notebook, pens, pencil, etc
  • tracing paper.

Peter Bebergal is a writer on occulture who has been playing roleplaying games for over 40 years. He has written game material for Chaosium, and is the author of Season of the Witch and Strange Frequencies, among others. Gareth Branwyn writes about fringe media, culture, spirituality, and technology. An avid tabletop gamer for over 40 years, he writes on gaming for Boing Boing. His 13 books include The Happy Mutant Handbook (with Boing Boing editors) and Borg Like Me (and Other Tales of Art, Eros, and Embedded Systems). Their joint forthcoming book is The Path of Enchantment: A Magical Role-playing Game (Strange Attractor Press).
