A new translation of the famed dramatist's extraordinary final writings – from his notebook, his letters to his last works.

Collected in this volume are the last known writings of dramatist Antonin Artaud, most recognised for his invention of the 'Theatre of Cruelty'. Edited and translated by Stephen Barber, a professor at the Kingston School of Art, this book includes Artaud's last writings published between 1947 and 1948; a startling piece of commentary on his own drawings titled 50 Drawings to Assassinate Magic; a short text, Tutuguri, describing itself as a 'black ritual, performed for the glory of the sun'; the last letters and interviews given by Artaud; excerpts from his notebook written in the last weeks of his life; and lastly a piece of glossolalia inscribed into the edges of a drawing, The Projection of the true body. These writings, even while at times fragmentary, are stark and visceral, and reveal much of the creative power and philosophical impulses that drove Artaud's impactful and still often challenging work. This book is essential for anyone interested in Artaud and the history of experimental theatre.
