Part-personal narrative, part-history, an account of humanity's – and the author's own – search for the supernatural with the aid of technology.
The familiar tools of the ghost-hunter – EMF (electro-magnetic field) detectors, voice recorders, night cameras, and others – are part of a longer and larger history, one in which humanity, bound by mortality, employs technology to probe the possibilities of life after death. This book, subtitled The Extraordinary Story of the Technological Quest for the Supernatural, weaves together a history of this quest with the author's own personal experience of constructing and using these devices. The contraptions discussed range from spiritually animated automata – of which the golem is perhaps the most iconic – to modern every-day gadgets, such as cameras and answering machines. There is much insight to be drawn from this book about bigger themes such humanity's relationship to the spiritual, and the role of technology as both means and an end to itself.
