The Sacred & the Sinister is a four-part collection of essays contributing to research on the ambiguous line separating religion from magic during the Middle Ages.

This book is divided into four parts: ‘Traditional Holiness,’ ‘Conflicts Over the Holy,’ ‘Identifying and Grappling with the Unholy,’ and ‘Magic and the Cosmos.’ Within these parts are essays by a wide range of contributors examining the relationship between religion and magic during the medieval period. A valuable academic resource, The Sacred & the Sinister provides an in-depth view of the ways in which medieval magic and religion so closely relate to eachother. Each essay is followed by its corresponding list of notes, and a selected bibliography is included at the end of the book.
